Education Associate

Part time, temporary, with potential for full time permanent 15-20 hours per week to start.

Pay commensurate with experience.


Reporting Relationships:

Supervised by Director of Education.


Brief Position Summary:

Assist visitors and students of all ages in developing an understanding of the process of making scientific observations and discoveries to inspire them to actively explore science related topics and learn about the principles and properties of light, energy, sound, perception, matter, etc. Other duties include performing live scripted shows in the Tesla Theater and on the museum floor demonstrating various aspects of science. Candidates must have experience working with people of all ages and be comfortable speaking before groups. Experience in teaching or training is helpful. Bachelor's degree is preferred and training will be provided. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required for travel to off-site outreach programs.


Requirements and Special Skills:

• High school diploma required.

• Preference given for experience in education and/or museums.

• Must be friendly, outgoing, and personable.

• Ability to deliver a dynamic and engaging presentation to large audiences (up to 150 people).

• Must be organized and able to complete tasks in a timely manner without direct supervision.

• Ability to relate to a wide variety of individuals.

• Ability to work effectively with others and be a team player.

• Able to periodically lift up to 30 lbs.

• Physically able to walk/stand throughout work shift.

Guest Services Associate

Reporting Relationships:

Supervised by the Director of Guest Services. May also be occasionally supervised by Guest Services Coordinator. Works closely with Exhibit Technicians, museum floor staff and volunteers, Director of Informal Learning, and Director of Educational Programs.


Brief Position Summary:

This person is primarily responsible for daily admissions and museum store sales. This person will convey a positive and upbeat attitude towards customers and provide friendly service both in person and over the phone. Also responsible for register accountability.


Description of Duties:

• Directly responsible for admissions, museum store sales, and answering phone calls

• Promotion and sales of memberships

• Promotion, sales, and coordination of birthday parties

• Must work proportionate share of after-hours events

• Responsible for daily cash of the registers

• May also be assigned specific work related to other departments depending on availability,

   talents, and skills


Requirements and Special Skills:

• High school diploma or G.E.D.

• Preferred experience in a retail sales setting including inventory management

• Experience customer relations

• Must be well organized

• Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications

• Friendly, outgoing personality and ability to relate to a wide variety of people

• Ability to work a flexible schedule occasionally unsupervised

• Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation

• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.




Job Summary

To provide superlative service to Mid- America Science Museum guests and co-workers by maintaining a clean, sanitary, comfortable and tidy environment. This position will uphold the image of Mid-America as a first class science museum and tourist destination. This is an exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours of work per week.


Department: Operations


Reports to: Chief Operations Officer


Education: High School diploma or GED


Experience Required: A minimum of 6 months housekeeping experience


Job Responsibilities

• Follows detailed worksheet for daily, weekly, monthly cleaning

• Cleans 8 bathrooms twice daily, plus additional cleaning as necessary

• Vacuums Museum space daily, plus additional cleaning as necessary

• Mops front entrance, bathrooms, café and Museum floor daily, plus as needed

• Dusts daily

• Gathers and empties trash

• Cleans interior windows

• Replenish supplies such as bathroom paper products

• Dusts and cleans handrails

• Maintains cleanly appearance for the interior of Museum

• Wash linens as necessary

• Inform supervisor when supplies are running low

• Other duties as assigned


Special Skills

• Must be able to communicate clearly with staff and guests

• Be able to reach, bend, stoop frequently

• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.

• Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation

• Must work proportionate share of after hour events

• Provide a positive contribution to the moral and working environment of the museum
