Geology and Geography
Erosion Explosion. Visit a series of classroom stations to learn about various types of weathering and erosion. Finalize your visit with a visit to our “Erosion Table” and “Earthquake Table”.
GPS. Develop your navigational skills and sharpen your technology skills through our GPS class. Students will learn plot points and navigate on the museum grounds through the use of Gamin GPS Systems.
Back to Nature. Explore outdoors to see how weather has shaped the grounds at Mid-America Science Museum. Add a touch of technology by viewing various soil samples through our digital ProScopes as learn to distinguish types of rock formations.
Museum Math
3M’s – Museum, Math, and Measurement. Learn how all of this relates as you conduct observations on the bridge as you approach the museum. This introductory lesson on measurement can be structured to reinforce concepts of measurement, geometry, and counting that have been previously introduced.
Structures of Math. Visit the “Structures Area” to learn how math is used in the everyday task of bridge-building. Build your own bridge from marshmallows or gumdrops to learn which shapes form the strongest structures.
Force, Motion, and Machines
Weight on Me. Learn about force as you weigh various objects using the metric unit, Newtons and the standard unit, pounds. During select times you can apply what you know by visiting “Newton’s Corner” exhibit to see force in action.
Energy
Clickety Clack. Learn about weight, force, mass, friction, potential energy, kinetic energy, and more as you participate in this simple yet engaging activity that brings the transfer of energy to life. Apply what you’ve learned by going on an energy hunt inside the museum. How many exhibits can you find that relates to this "massive" topic?
Chemical and Physical Changes
Blushing Granny. Use indictors to detect acids and bases. With the careful manipulation of an alkaline solution with an indicator you can watch the chemical change occur right before your eyes.
Disappearing Stain. See how "chemical reactions" can remove chemicals from objects as you make stains disappear when certain chemicals are removed. This activity teaches about chemical property, physical property, chemical change, and mixture.
